Co-author path

Recently the big software companies have started to invest into providing overviews of scientific publishing. Google’s recent attempt is nice in that one can actually access and modify the automatically created web profiles, remove papers which are not ones own, and add those that are missing (such as all under my old name).
For a result, have a look at my Google Scholar profile.
Microsoft, however, has built a much nicer visual output with graph visualizations of one’s own co-authors and even co-author paths. Below is an image which shows how many authors stand between me and Stephen Hawking. To play with the tool yourself go here.

Summer in Canada and Alaska

We spent this summer traveling around Canada and Alaska with a camper. It was loads of fun and nice to spend a few weeks without email. Here are some pictures from the trip. Available online for a little while when I’ll turn them back to private:

Barbapapa

I went to Parc Asterix this weekend with my sister and had a revelation – just when I was standing in front of a snack food stand. Maybe if you grew up around my childhood time you remember the Barbapapa Comics. The dad was called Barbapapa and was a big pink pear shaped being. Now where exactly that came from became clear to me at Parc Asterix:

August in France

August in France is something special – mostly because everyone who hasn’t already gone on vacation promptly leaves the weekend closest to August 1st. This year I learned that the Franch have a name for the day when everyone leaves on vacation: it is called journée noire. This is after a traffic categorization scheme which has green, orange, red, and black colors from normal to extremely dense traffic:

So the fact is – it is now the beginning of August and everyone is on vacation. This is visible in a number of interesting ways:

  • All university cafeterias are closed – there is no food to get around here anywhere (and we are on a plateau with a number of different universities and research institutions – each with their own closed cafeterias)
  • The university campus gates are locked – you now have to enter and exit through special gates (like at night on non august days)
  • Our library has shut down
  • We moved into a new building with a number of hiccups which will not be fixed until September (e.g. bathroom doors which don’t lock, toilets which don’t flush, lights which don’t turn on, …)
  • Administrative things pile up until September
  • The trains are on a summer schedule. which is nice as it makes our garden quieter but at the same time it means much longer travel times to Paris

These are just some of the many things in which life is getting closer to a standstill – at the same time that the Parisians flee the area, the tourists are coming in – more about that some other time…

Happy Fête Nationale!

Today is France’s national holiday. On this day there are military parades, firefighter balls, and fireworks going on all over the place. Last night we went to a nearby town to watch the fireworks. Tonight we are planning to see the real thing in Paris – last year it was fabulous. We will skip the military parade though – I feel uneasy about military equipment and soldiers being shown off for public amusement.

Expats Survey

HSBC visualizes and shows data comparing survey results about people living abroad.

I just took the 2011 survey and this was quite revealing about what it is that they are actually visualizing. My data, for example cannot be quite accurate. For example,  I was  asked to compare France (my current country) to Germany (my home country). However, I have not lived in Germany for 7 years now and I am much less able to compare things such as prices and standard of living – for questions such as “do you now pay more for utilities”. I would have been much more able to make a fair comparison from France to Canada (where I lived the 6 years before) also since my life situation was much more similar there than back in Germany.

Anyways, it’s still quite neat to see that data and to see France ranked so highly (the picture above shows a comparison just based on the topics “experience” and “offspring” – with economics taken into account both countries drop considerably in ranking (I definitely concur with that).

Gardening

Tomato plant in May

This week’s ZEIT has a number of articles on city people’s new found joy of gardening. They point out some really interesting projects which I wasn’t aware of, for example window farms: http://www.windowfarms.org/.I feel very tempted to try one of these out, although we now have a terrace making this a bit pointless. While gardening was a new trend I wasn’t quite aware of, I have also begun to grow some of my own things including some herbs and this year for the first time some tomatoes. On the left you can see what the plant looked like in May. I hope that it will actually carry some tomatoes and grow a little taller, too.

In the winter maybe I will make my own window farm, if I can find the time. Instructions can be found here: http://our.windowfarms.org/ Has anyone tried?

Slang 1,2,3

If you really want to impress your German co-workers – have a look at this website from the BBC. It explains a lot of German slang expression including the (cite) real German classic (/cite): LMAA:

P.S. It also has a lot of French that I am trying to learn at the moment
